The Rutgers University Program in Juvenile Justice and Youth Development is pleased to announce the launch of our
Juvenile Justice and Youth Development Certificate Program!

Designed to attract, recruit, train, and retain a workforce prepared to address the demands of juvenile justice and work with young people impacted by the system, the Rutgers Program in Juvenile Justice and Youth Development offers professional education opportunities drawing from the fields of psychology, social work, criminal justice, law, and education.

The Juvenile Justice and Youth Development Certificate Program consists of 60 hours of live, instructor-led online learning, so you can log on and attend class from anywhere, while learning from leading faculty and experts in the fields of juvenile justice and youth development. The course requirements can be completed in six months or spread out over a longer period to accommodate your scheduling needs.The certificate curriculum consists of four foundational courses, five electives (with offerings on topics including juvenile law and related policy, mental health, and substance abuse interventions) and a capstone project.

This certificate program is designed for a wide range of disciplines and open to all those interested in the improvement of the juvenile justice system. Course participants may include Juvenile Justice and Child Welfare Professionals; Probation and Court Service Professionals; Judges; Social Workers; Probation Officers and Managers; Prosecuting Attorneys; Public Defenders; Guardians Ad Litem and Child Law Attorneys; Educational Staff and Advocates; Behavioral Health Providers and Clinicians; Federal, State and Local Policy Makers and Advocates; and other professionals involved in working with justice-involved youth.

Certificate Program Components and Fees


To earn the Juvenile Justice and Youth Development Certificate, you must successfully complete a combination of required courses, elective courses, and a capstone project as described below.

The cost to complete the full certificate program is $2,800.

Students are welcome to sign up for one or more individual courses even if they don't plan to complete the entire certificate. The cost of each individual course is $295 per person.

REQUIRED COURSES (4)

Attend four 6-hour required courses to receive a thorough understanding of the essential elements of juvenile justice and youth development.

ELECTIVE COURSES (5)

Attend your choice of five 6-hour elective courses to explore the topics and issues most relevant to your professional interests. Course options may include:


  • Trauma-informed Care
  • Substance Abuse Interventions
  • Special Topics in Juvenile Law
  • Racial Disparities in Juvenile Justice
  • Reentry Strategies
  • Special Topics in Education

CAPSTONE PROJECT (1)

Complete this 6-hour online course to tie together all of the competencies you've gained throughout the certificate program.


  • Open to certificate program participants after 8 or more courses have been completed
  • Consists of a multifaceted assignment that will draw upon the student's experiences and knowledge gained throughout the program
  • Includes a presentation session in which students will share their Capstone Project with other participants
